Brian Bland had always wanted a Broom 37 and for over a year he watched the website of Newark Marine. They had one for sale, but first he had to sell his Freeman 33 Sportsman. Eventually they found a buyer and sold the Freeman, so they were free to go to Newark to look at Lymina as she was then called. Built in 1969, she was one of four of the first Continentals built with GRP hull and wooden topsides. After an hour spent looking over her Brian made an offer on the boat which was accepted the next day.

  • The boat was previously called 'Lymina' and was sold through Newark Marine
  • She was transported from Newark to Norfolk and put back in the water at Anglia Yacht Brokers. Her new home would be the Crown Cruisers yard at Somerleyton, where she was renamed Maggie B.
  • After two seasons use, Brian decided to attend to the soft spots on the deckand took the boat to Broom's for a refit.
  • Work started at the beginning of September with removal of the rails, rubbing strips and canopy in order to strip the rot.
  • Rotten sections from the side decks are ripped out
  • With the side decks removed there's a clear view into the aft cabin
  • In November, three months after work started, Brian received a call from Andrew Stone to say the walls in the aft heads were all rotten and needed to be ripped out.
  • The original heads before the work
  • Work starts on the old heads - the reflection shows some of the problem areas
  • 0ne of the pieces removed from the heads in the aft cabin
  • A selection of the rottern timbers which were ripped out.
  • This was the aft cabin during restoration - what used to be two singles is now a large double.
  • Brian inspects what used to be his aft cabin
  • The aft cabin from a different angle
  • New timbers are put in place ready to support the new decks
  • New timbers in place in the aft cabin
  • By December she started to look better as the new sides and decks started to go back.
  • All the decks were fibre-glassed and then painted white, with the sides painted burgundy to match the new canopy. Sliding doors to the saloon were also finished in burgundy.
  • The new heads as they look today
  • Finally completed and back in the water
  • Total cost so far £24,000 and phase 2 is still to start. Next year is the turn of the roof.
