Maintenance work on the lifting bridge over the Barrage lock and other works were finally completed on 17th April. The operation commenced in January and during this period there was no access to or from the Rance estuary from either end, as the lock at Le Chatelier was also closed.  All is now reported to be back to normal, in time for the season.

Marina Updates PDF Print E-mail

For those who are planning to visit Channel Islands’ waters this season, here are some updates about marinas on the adjacent French coast:

Le Legue - The marina and facilities have been refurbished and some shops bars & cafes have opened nearby. There are plans for a new 1,000 berth marina to be built outside the lock in two phases due for completion in 2010.

St Servan - A yacht club has been opened above the marina office.

St Malo, Bassin Vaubin - Work has started on the construction of a 480 space underground car park. There is a very large hole where the bus station and road alongside the tourism office used to be, so expect noise & dust for some time!

Granville - Much-needed new 9m fingers have been installed.

Cartaret - The marina has been dredged, together with the channel immediately outside the marina entrance, however the dredged area is reportedly quite narrow.

New Marina at l’Aberwrac’h PDF Print E-mail

At long last a new deep water marina has opened on the North Brittany coast. L’Aberwrac’h has long been a popular port of call for yachtsmen heading for South Brittany, as it provides sheltered moorings and is well placed to time a cruise through the notorious Chenal du Four. However it has been less popular with motor boaters, due to the lack of pontoons, electricity and shore access - we’re a bit soft, aren’t we?

This has all changed with the opening in July of the new marina with access at all states of tide and holding almost 300 boats, including 80 dedicated visitors berths and all the usual facilities. The marina is situated in a very picturesque estuary and I understand that the local Chamber of Commerce will be running a shopper bus service from the marina to a nearby town during the boating season.

I am sure this new facility will tempt more members to venture ’round the corner’ to the cruising delights of South Brittany.

As you may have seen in the press, Jersey’s government had suggested imposing a tax on marine leisure fuel. Strong representations were submitted by the boating fraternity and marine industries and I am pleased to report that the proposal has been dropped, so you can put Jersey back into your cruising plans for next season!

Summer 2006 Report PDF Print E-mail

I was contacted for advice in May by a member who was planning a first cruise to the Channel Islands. The ‘Cruise in Company’ fleet met him in Cherbourg, where he was stuck with an engine problem. He eventually arrived in Jersey just before we left for France, having had parts flown in. Otherwise, apart from one member, who is a regular visitor to St Malo and a non-member 50 ‘parked’ in St Helier, we’ve seen no other Brooms all summer. Where was everyone?
