I’m delighted to have been chosen to be the regional coordinator for the South Coast and South West Region, taking over from Frank Hawkins who has been appointed chair of BOC.  He will be a hard act to follow but fortunately for me, he will still be on hand to give help and support as a member of Southern Region.

I and my husband John have been boating for twenty five years and we joined the Broom Owners Club when it was first established.  We started our boating life first by hiring boats on the Thames, and then at a later stage, in our first boat a 19 foot Shetland Family Four. Conditions on a boat of that size were very cramped, especially for John who is 6.4”!  However, it did give us a chance to find out if boating was for us.  It was, and over the years we moved up the sizes of sea-going motor cruisers, buying our current Broom 38cl “Quantum Leap” in 2001.  Our cruising grounds have been the Thames Estuary and Eastern and Southern Coasts.  More recently, we have started to explore the northern France.  We moor at Swanwick Premier Marina on the Hamble River and as a result, are able to take advantage of the excellent cruising area the Solent offers.

The Southern Region has a core group of very active members and together we have developed a good range of social events.  However, there are a number of members who, for whatever reason, do not get involved in any of the BOC activities. My aim is to try to meet the needs of as many members as possible through the range of events we organise and I would welcome any suggestions for visits, talks etc. as well as offers of help.  Also, I would like to work closely with our current members in the South West, organising some activities that centre on Dorset, Devon and Cornwall.  Hopefully, this might encourage more Broom owners from those areas to get involved in the club.

Happy boating!

Gill
